Statement on Stockley Verdict

We grieve with the African American community, and all persons of strong heart and faith at the recent verdict in the 2011 killing of Anthony Lamar Smith by former police officer Jason Stockley. Once again, we are outraged that the shooting death of a black man at the hands of a white officer becomes one more statistic in a very, very long line of cases that end with no culpability on the part of the officer. In the midst of outrage and grief, as a faith community we are called to continually work for justice, engage in peaceful protest, and offer our prayers for the family and the whole community. We must never stop fighting for justice in whatever ways we have available to right the wrongs of a system that is deeply broken. We pray that somehow, God will make a way where there seems to be no way.
